Community

• Two new Citrus Connection microbus routes are coming to Lakeland. The Eastside + Westside circulator routes will have fewer stops, offering more direct service. Along with this change, six routes will end earlier each day and two will be available earlier in the morning. 🚌 (The Ledger)

• Polk State College President Dr. Angela Garcia Falconetti has been appointed to the national Education Commission of the States where she will represent the state of Florida. She will be one of seven Florida commission members, including the governor, that will work to track education policy. 🍎

Civic

• The Winter Haven City Commission has proposed a budget of $183.4 million for the next fiscal year, reducing the city's millage rate from $6.79 to $6.59 per $1,000 of assessed property value. Since property values increased 21% last year, homeowners could still pay more in taxes. (The Ledger)

• Florida’s 2022 Back-to-School tax holiday began last week and runs through Sun., Aug. 7. Take advantage of tax exemptions on children’s clothing, school supplies, computers, and learning aids before Polk County Public Schools resume classes on Wed., Aug. 10. • 1.8 million. That’s how many square feet the new Terminal C will add to Orlando International Airport. Set to open in September, the project is considered one of the largest terminal projects to debut in the US in recent years. ✈️

Editor's pick: Maybe I was inspired by Drink Up Week, but my new mission is to become a home barista. I stopped by the last day of the Downtown Farmers Curb Market before its August break this weekend and picked up a few locally roasted bags from Ethos Coffee Roasters to keep honing my craft. Let’s see if I can make a latte to rival Hillcrest.
